Castle of Cheverny – Chateau de Cheverny

For more than six centuries, the Chateau de Cheverny has belonged to the same family; the Hurault family. It was an ancestor of the current owners, the chancellor to King Henri III and IV, who constructed it.

It is one of the purest expressions of French classical architecture. It is undoubtedly what inspired HergĂ© when drawing the castle of Moulinsart – the castle of Captain Haddock in the popular Tintin comic books. This is the reason why the castle accommodates a permanent exhibition devoted to the intrepid reporter.

But the main feature of the visit of Cheverny is of course its architecture. The construction took approximately thirty years. The building is erected in the middle of a vast park in which rare herbs were planted. Its southern front surprises by its homogeneity, its perfect symmetry and its roof made of gray slate.

Inside, the rooms are decorated and furnished with a great concern of harmony. Don’t forget to visit the room of weapons in which you will find, of course, a collection of weapons from the 15th and the 17th centuries but also a tapestry from the 17th century from the Manufacture des Gobelins.
Between the beautiful park, the Tintin Museum and the exceptional architecture, the castle of Cheverny also provides one of the most pleasant walks in France.
