Castle of Amboise – Chateau d’Amboise

This beautiful castle, which began life in the eleventh century, was at one time the French royal palace during the 15th & 16th centuries when it was home to royal kings.

On the 4th of September in 1434 Charles VII seized the Chateau after its owner, Louis d’Amboise, was executed for plotting against Louis XI. Once in the hands of the Royal family it was a favourite of French kings, notably, King Francois I who was famous for bringing Leonardo da Vinci to Amboise as his guest and subsequently introduced Italian Renaissance to France.

Famous for its gardens and small gothic chapel of St-Hubert, notable for the fact that Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb was once here.

The Chateau is most remarkable for it’s Italian Renaissance decorative motifs, the first seen in France, and as the site of the origin of the French formal garden.
